I fully appreciate the need that the “Save” button fulfilled thirty years ago when disk and cpu resources where hard to come by, but today ….. please. My documents should be saved as I type them and not require me to manually press Ctrl -S or “Save”. I don’t understand why an application can crash and I lose my work or why when I shutdown and forget to save something its gone. Why does the “Save” button still exist?
Tomboy Notes does a fantastic job with “Save”. Why can’t other applications? In fact, I’ll say it… I Love Tomboy Notes:-) Of course it has its warts, the outline tool is not very sophisticated and sharing notes is not as easy as it should be but overall I’d say it is one of my favorite applications. Why you ask? It’s simple. It does its job and it does it simply.
First, it’s accessible, it sits in the toolbar always running. If you select the icon you’re not bombarded with a massive application but simply given a menu of your last 12 note titles with an option to either search or create a new one. Hummm seems pretty simple.
Secondly, when you start writing a note, Tomboy’s ease of use kicks in. If you type a URL, its linked, if you type the name of another Tomboy note, its linked, if you stop typing and hit “Esc” the note disappears, and best of all as soon as you stop typing everything is already saved. There is not even a “Save” button in Tomboy!
And thirdly, it is stupid simple. It doesn’t try to do document editting, it doesn’t try to do elaborate sytling or fonts, you can’t setup columns or any of that nonsense. It does one thing, it sits quietly by waiting to help you take notes.
